The Légal Trap

Named after French chess master Sire de Légal, the Légal Trap allows you to control the center of the board and checkmate your opponent in 8 moves. Although the trap focuses primarily on aggression, deception is lurking in the shadows, waiting for a chance to strike.

After baiting the queen, you can force checkmate in 2 moves. Typically set up against the Philidor Defense, the simplicity of this move with a hidden attack makes it the perfect opening against any opponent.

It starts with pawn to e4., to which your opponent responds e5. Next you play knight to f3. attack their e5. pawn. They defend their pawn with knight to c6. and you move bishop to c4., the Italian Game. They make a mistake when playing pawn to d6. because it blocks their f8. bishop from development. Establish dominance over the center of the board by bringing your knight to c3. The most common move is for your opponent to play bishop to g4., pinning your knight to the king. In attempts to protect their bishop, they move it back to h5. The next move is the most important as it is the surprise element in the opening and allows for forced checkmate in two. Play the brilliant knight to e5., sacrificing the queen. If they ignore your bait and take your knight with their knight, take their bishop with your queen, setting you up for checkmate in one (queen to f7.) If they fall for the bait and take your queen, move your bishop to f7. Their only move is king to e7, which you respond knight to d5 (checkmate.)

Now you know the Légal Trap, an opening that allows you to get an advantage on your opponent in almost any point of the opening.
