Duct Tape Chess!

I was watching a MythBusters episode once where the two main hosts of the show went to an island and the only thing they brought along was duct tape.

Duct tape is the all-purpose king of fixer-upper thingy-majigers. It is strong and sticks to things incredibly well (unless your trying to hang a microphone to the ceiling :P). One thing that the two hosts, Jamie and Adam, created to keep themselves from becoming bored was a chess set. A duct tape chess set with the pieces made from sticks and a base of duct tape, while the board was completely made from duct tape.

And that inspired me to make my own duct tape chess set! So I got some gray duct tape and gold duct tape, some magnets (the circle kind and the strips of magnets), scissors, and a ruler and set to work! So far, I have created the board. I put the strips of magnets down, creating a magnetic chess set, and then duct taped the magnets together into one big, gray square that is about 64 centimeters long and 65 centimeters wide. Then I put squares of gold duct tape down and used a sharpie to outline each square to give it each square a little more presence to it.

And that is my board! I put the letters down on the bottom and top with sharpie and did the same for the numbers down one side of the board. It looks pretty good. I bet it could be a lot better if I tried even harder but I didn't really want to try harder.

Next I am going to create the pieces with the circle magnets being the base of each piece. I have some bendable wire that is sturdy but easy to bend thatI am going to use to create and outline of the pieces, then duct tape around the outside.

I can't wait to see the finished product, and so far, it has been fun to make too. The board looks great. I am a not sure how the pieces are going to come out, but I think they'll be fine.

I'll make sure to post some pictures in a post to show you guys what the finished product looks like. Keep Playing Chess!
