On Sunday, I became the 2022 DC State Amateur Champion after I scored 3.5/4 points in the DC State Championships run by the DC Chess League. I shared the title with another player that earned that score as well (we drew in my third match, which I will discuss in my next post).

The tournament was my first win at a significant tournament and the continuation of a stretch of successes as I placed 2nd in a Charm City Sunday Action and the top U1400 player in a DC Black Knights tournament over the past couple of weeks. I'm playing well and gaining a lot of experience over-the-board. In the last 2 weeks, my US Chess rating has grown by over 200 points!

This tournament success came partly because I've been focused on practicing and improving everyday, but also through a series of lucky events.

Luck needed: 1) my first round opponent forfeited. 2) my second round opponent, the one that I am showing below, got confused about his board assignment. By the time he and the tournament directors recognized the error, almost an hour had past on the clock and once we started the game, I had an hour advantage. 3) There were only 4 rounds, so though there was little room for error, it also meant that a 3.5 points was enough to win. Even in chess when there seems to be very little left to chance, luck is needed to be successful.

In the last few weeks, I've earned victories over 1840, 1690, and 1746 rated players. That is not a coincidence. It is the result of my commitment to growth. Below is my analysis of my first win from the past weekend.
