The zwischenzug (intermediate move) is a chess tactic in which a player, instead of playing the expected move (commonly a recapture), first interposes another move posing an immediate threat that the opponent must answer, and only then plays the expected move.

In this game my opponent blundered with Rc1, expecting to capture my Queen with his Rook after I captured his Queen with my Rook. However, my opponent failed to recognize the zwischenzug at my disposal.
