Hey Guys,

Welcome to this blog it is going to be the last blog in the series of checkmate patterns. I would be showing queen checkmate patterns.Queen checkmate patterns are easiest to study and apply .Queen is most powerful piece so while calculating you have to be precise as if you miss something you can lose your game. With this let's start -

  1. Basic Endgame Pattern-      This is one of the basic checkmate which a beginner learns .If you know this you can even win the game if you have only a pawn left on board. The pattern includes placing the queen to a knight's distance and then including our king into action to support our queen to get a win .  Remember this can only happen in the corner of board.

2BackRank Mate-  We have already seen this mate in this blog .The pawns in front of opponent's king stop him/her to escape and we deliver checkmate.
As we already know about it, a puzzle to recall -

3.Corridor Mate - The corridor mate includes two rook and a queen, the pieces can interchange their place but a queen will always be required if it happens in center of the board- either to prevent king from escape or to deliver checkmate .

4.Damiano's Mate-      This checkmate often starts with sacrifice of our rook(s) .For this mate to occur we need a pawn to support our queen on b3 or g3 with black and g6 /b6 to checkmate with white.

In this the rook brings king to a desired square from where it cannot escape and our pawn supports the queen and often stops the king to escape and queen delivers checkmate.

This pattern was introduced by Pedro Damiano in 1512 .

The Latest  game in which it was seen -

5.Epaulette Mate- This mate got it's name from it's appearance , it looks like an ornamental shoulder piece worn by a military leader. In this the king is surrounded by his own pieces mostly rooks. Then our queen delivers checkmate .

It happened in a game of comedians on board 3 , the pattern didn't occur exactly but was identical-
In this game both the players didn't play well as both of them are absolute beginners but they got an advance pattern which is what we need.

6.Lolli Mate -    This is one of the most general pattern which we see in queen checkmates. The queen is supported by a pawn to deliver checkmate .The pawn can also be replaced by a bishop.

At the place of a pawn or bishop you can even have a king if you are GM Nigel Short .

7.Kill Box Mate -      This checkmate includes a rook and a queen to function together . This checkmate maybe got it's name from it's appearance -it looks like the king is in a box and the rook delivers the checkmate. The queen stops the king to escape . Let's know about this mate directly from a puzzle.

8.Max Lange Mate -             This checkmate is named after a German chess player from late 19th century, Max Lange. In this mate a queen and a bishop are included, the bishop prevents the king to escape and hence is our watchman and queen delivers checkmate being our killer.
A puzzle to check if you have got the pattern -

9.Cozio Mate - This pattern is also called dovetail mate due to it's appearance like a dove's tail. It was published by an italian player named Carlos Cozio .
This pattern can be useful to stop opponent's   rook pawn (one square away to become a queen)from queening .
The initial pattern looks like -
To stop a rook pawn-

So this was last part of our checkmate series, I hope you liked it and as always please do not fail to identify the pattern and implement it.
