Mirror Moving, Why You should Avoid It

Mirror Moving, Why You should Avoid It

I know you may be wondering,"What in the world is mirror moving??" so allow me to explain. Mirror moving, is the term I have given for times when an opponent (who is playing black) copies all the moves white does, just they're flipped. Here is a common example you might encounter...

It truly is bad idea for black since, if black continues to do this in the opening, white will always be one move ahead. Eventually, if white plays good moves, white will have a clear advantage (i.e. piece development, position, attacks). Black, on the other hand, won't have an edge over white (and in chess, having an edge over your opponent is everything) and might miss key opportunities, since he is too busying mirroring, that could have put black ahead of white.

Now that I have explained what mirror moving (and why you should avoid it!) is, you might be asking, "So, what kind of players would ever do this tactic if it is so bad?" and my answer to that is, (drum-roll please) new players! Yep, mostly new and inexperienced players who don't know what else to move and think their opponent's moves are really good, are the kind of people you find doing this. Though you can find more experienced players doing it too now and then. But the main people doing it are the new people.

The moral of the story is, never do mirror moves tongue.png That's all for now! May all your chess games be full of wins! happy.png
