For today’s video, I’d like to talk about the key ideas to use when evaluating exchanges.
When I analyze my students’ games, one of the most common mistakes that I see appears when there are exchanges. It is so common to see automatic exchanges that I sometimes tell my students "When in doubt, don’t exchange!".
In the same way that we should never play automatically in any position, I noticed that automatically trading pieces is a common way for some players to relieve tension, as if seeing less pieces on the board brings more calmness. The problem with this is that very often we end up improving our opponent’s pieces or even forcing a losing position for us.
Trading pieces is a broad topic (that’s why I created a course about it!) but with this lesson you’ll learn the 3 most important ideas to avoid basic mistakes when exchanging pieces.
