Divya Deshmukh: From Nagpur Prodigy to India’s First Women’s World Cup Winner

Divya Deshmukh’s chess journey began in Nagpur, where she was born in 2005 into a supportive family that valued both education and sport.
From a young age, she balanced her studies with intensive chess training, often dedicating hours after school to improving her game.
Her early career was filled with success, winning gold at the Asian Continental Women in 2023 and the Tata Steel Women’s Rapid the same year.
She also became the World U-20 Girls Champion in 2024, signaling her readiness for the senior stage.
At the 45th Chess Olympiad in 2024, she played a pivotal role in securing team gold for India, earning an individual gold medal with a remarkable 2608 performance rating.
These victories set the stage for her breakthrough at the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup in Batumi, Georgia.
Entering as the 15th seed, Divya stunned the chess world by defeating elite players including Zhu Jiner, Harika Dronavalli, and Tan Zhongyi.
In the final, she overcame Indian legend Koneru Humpy in tense tiebreaks to claim the championship.
This victory made her India’s first Women’s World Cup winner and earned her the Grandmaster title, making her only the fourth Indian woman to achieve the title.
