When Steinitz lived in England, he had financial problems and earned a living by playing in cafe 'Gambit'. One day Steinitz found an advantageous opponent who paid 1 pound for every lost game. Steinitz gave up a knight to his opponent and always won.
One of the world champion's friends told him that he could lose a client if he would always win. This advice seemed sound for the champion and in the next game Steinitz gave up a queen to his partner and lost the game. Steinitz arranged the figures and was ready to play again. But this happy person jumped out from the table and exclaimed: 'I beat the world chess champion! My dream came true!' Then he ran out and left the cafe.
