Game 2 (My First Tournament)
Round 2: I'll keep this one short. It was a disaster. Some of my initial nerves about playing in a tournament were gone, but I made some fundamental errors in the opening and never recovered. I slowed down in my study, stretching this out to 53 minutes, but I was crushed by the 6th move.
My opponent, a polite 11 year old boy, went straight to the Giocco Piano opening. This is a basic opening, but I clearly need more fundamental strategic instruction. When he began to advance his King side knight, I did not move my h pawn. For me at that moment, that was THE only way I knew that could hold back the knight's next move. When he moved it to g5, I panicked. In hindsight, I can see it, and looking at the position for so long in terror, it's kind of burned into my head. However, in the moment, I could not find d5 to break the attack.
2 Blunders in the first 6 moves, both with my Queen. Talk about digging your own grave. I ended up in a weak and reactive position. The kid never even developed his queen side minor pieces.
My only positive take-aways were that I took more time to study and that I'll never do THAT again.
If you like good train wreck, here you go. (spoiler, there are better games ahead
)
Also, a question for those who know better: In my place, when would you have resigned?
