I have absolutely no idea where or when I learned to play chess.  Sometime during grade school, I'm sure, I picked up on how to move the pieces.  That being said, I never really studied it or played the game seriously or regularly.  Grade school was the 70's and 80's and I didn't have access to computer software to play.  I didn't really know anyone who was into it.

Fast forward about 30-40 years to the winter/spring of 2021.
The pandemic and other mental health issues in my household reduced or limited my access to my outlets.  Playing guitar, traveling to a Zen center for mediation retreats, playing disc golf, the list goes on.  At a time when I needed connection and activity, 'stay-at-home' restrictions took all that away from me.  Regardless of how I feel about it, I know these are difficult times.

Why bring up this unfortunate tale?  Like many people in the spring of 2021, my family and I were watching a lot of TV.  My daughter and I were working through Deep Space 9, while my wife preferred sitcoms and new release series.  That's how we came to watch the Queen's Gambit.  Yep, I returned to chess in part because of a show, but mostly because of all the extra time I found myself with that I couldn't fill.  As a side note, I was a skateboarder in the 80's and I got started because of the movie Back To The Future.  I guess I am inspired by movies and TV a fair bit.
I'm enjoying relearning the game.  As I age, keeping the mind active is of increasing priority to me.  I and currently rated in the 500's in rapid and the 600's in daily games.  I'm having fun, but trying hard.  I hope it stays fun and I hope I can get better.
