Playing on his home turf in Stavanger, Carlsen showcased his experience to outplay Gukesh in the classical game itself, thereby earning the full 1.5 points. Elsewhere, Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi made a strong start to his campaign by defeating China's top-ranked player Wei Yi in an intense Armageddon tiebreaker after their classical game ended in a draw. In another game, American GM Hikaru Nakamura got the better of Fabiano Caruana, also with black pieces.
