Sindarov Wins World Cup, London Chess Classic Starts today
World Cup:
Javokhir Sindarov officially clinched the 2025 FIDE World Cup title today in Goa, finishing off Wei Yi in rapid tiebreaks to become the youngest World Cup winner and secured a spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament.
Sindarov beat Wei Yi 1.5–0.5 in today’s rapid tiebreak mini‑match, winning the second game after a tense but ultimately decisive struggle, to take the World Cup 2.5–1.5 overall.
In the first rapid game today, Sindarov switched to 1.d4, steered the game into a Ragozin‑type Queen’s Gambit Declined, and converted after Wei Yi misjudged a bishop‑and‑pawns endgame with the weakening move 30…g5, allowing a winning king and pawn advance for White.
In the second rapid, an Italian Game saw Wei Yi with White choose a relatively passive setup; Sindarov equalized comfortably with …Be7 and …d6, activated his rooks, and had a nice position, but then with low time Wei played 57. Rxd4? and from there it was over from there.
