Hello Everyone. Today lets discuss about how to play positional chess.

Lets Start!

Now, first what is a positional chess player?

Positional play is when you gradually outplay your opponent. For example, if you manage to win a pawn and manage to realize that small advantage into a win. Usually players who like positional play (opposite to tactical players) are very patient players who prefer positional openings.

This is the definition given by Google.

Some of the best Positional Chess Players are Anatoly Karpov, Vladimir Kramnik, Boris Gelfand etc.

Now lets look at some of the tips to improve Positional Chess.

  • Try to convert a small advantage into a win : This is the main aim of playing positional chess. You should convert the advantage into a win by improving your pieces.
  • Try to attack the weaknesses in your opponent's camp: Generally the weaknesses in your opponent's camp are the squares in front backward pawns. You should attack it by placing your knights or bishops on those squares.
  • Before you go for the positional advantage you need to analyze the position: You can try to do this in all of your games.
  • Restrict your opponent's pieces: You should always restrict your opponent's pieces and at the same time you should improve your pieces.
  • Don't rush for the advantage: This is the most important thing as most of the players make this mistake while playing positional chess, they just rush for the advantage and their position gets collapsed and they lose.

Now I will prefer some of the positional chess openings:

White: The Queen's Gambit, The Catalan Opening and The English Opening.

Black: The French Defense, The Caro - Kann Defense and The Petroff Defense

Now lets look at some of the positional master games:

This is the game between Anatoly Karpov and Boris Spassky.

This is the game between Vladmir Kramnik and Vishwanathan Anand.

This is the game between Boris Gelfand and Veselin Topalov.
