Round 1 of 4, game in 90
Last week I played the first round of a five round game in 90 minutes tournament. I faced an opponent rated 200 points higher than me and lost. There were two essential reasons for the loss. First, I got in time trouble. Time trouble is a recurrent problem for me. In this case it was made worse by the fact that I did not know the opening. Later, time trouble would contribute to my blundering the exchange. The second shortcoming of my game was a strategic blunder. Once I was up a pawn around move 15 (my initial expenditure of time did have a payoff!), I decided to attack white's king instead of consolidating my position. Especially given my time trouble, the more conservative option was the better.
