The Origin of Chess
The Origins of Chess
Chapter 1: Chaturanga
Legend has it that chess was invented around 200 B. C. by a commander, Hán Xin, who invented the game as a battle simulator. Soon after winning the battle, the game was forgotten, but it resurfaced as chaturanga, which is well known as the origin of chess, created in the 6th or 7th century in India during the Gupta Dynasty. By the 10th century it had spread from Asia to the Middle East and Europe. The pieces originally represented the military units common in warfare at that time: infantry, cavalry, elephants, chariots, a general, and a king and it’s played in over 172 countries.
The only pieces carried over from chaturanga are the infantry (now known as pawns) and the chariots (now known as knights). At some point, it became customary and later a rule for white to move first. Supposedly black is the lucky color, and they said it would be too much of an advantage for a player to have the lucky color (black) AND move first!
Chapter 2: Later in Chess History
In the 20th century chess introduced titled players, and to achieve that goal you had to have been rated 2,400 ELO (rating) on 1 or multiple categories of OTB (Over The Board) chess. Then soon after the chess world was introduced to FIDE Chess Federation which was founded in Paris, France, on July 20, 1924.
For the 1924 Olympics an attempt was made to include chess in the Olympic Games but this failed because of problems with distinguishing between amateur and professional players. W hile the 1924 Summer Olympics was taking place in Paris, the 1st unofficial Chess Olympiad also took place in Paris.
