How to improve in chess when you are stuck

So let’s be honest, we have been stuck at a particular chess rating atleast once in our career. It may be at the rating of 100-200 or 800-1200 or even 2800-3200. This blog only focuses really on the rating range of 100-2300. So Enjoy reading a blog written freshly by a me, 2300 rated chess player.

100-600

So, if you are stuck at this elo, all you really have to do to improve your rating is just figure out how the pieces move, solve really easy puzzles and plan one-two moves ahead and improve your calculation skills. You don’t really have to practice positional play or anything like that. All you have to do is just understand and practice. Just learn the basic fundementals like taking pieces, planning ahead etc., and you will be out of this rating range fast.

700-1400

I’d say that most people are stuck at this rating range. And again, you really don’t have to move on to really advanced topics. Just learn basic tactics like skewer, fork, pin, etc., with respect to a little bit of positional play. Just be patient. Do not rush anything and double check your moves before playing it. I know it may be hard but all you have to do is revise your tactics and positional play and also make a very simple opening repertoire. For example if you like the London System, then analyze a few games in the same opening. The most important thing to do in rating ranges 800 and above is to analyze your games. You really have to analyze your games to improve, and also learn and apply the CCTP rule i.e. Check-Capture-Threat-Pawn break rule.

1500-2000

At this level you are nearly a master. This level demands positional play and high-level tactics. You have to analyze all your games and also play rapid time control if you weren’t playing it before. Here you must learn the art of prophylaxis and also apply the CCTP rule i.e. Check-Capture-Threat-Pawn break rule. This rule means that you have to look for checks first in the  present position and see if it gives you an advantage and then move on to captures and so on until pawn breaks. It may feel difficult at first but when it becomes a habit it feels like a piece of cake and you will improve very quickly. This rule is crucial at this level.

2000 and above

This is the hardest level to improve because you don’t have much to improve. At this level you only have to revise everything you have learned and go deeper in those topics and also make a proper opening repertoire. You also have to learn from the classics. For example you have to ask yourself what your favorite chess player. If you are good in tactics you may say Mikhail Tal while if you like positional play you may say Garry Kasparov etc. Now see the games of the player you have chosen and analyze them thoroughly. And also analyze all your games. Analyzing at this level is really crucial.
