Italian opening trap : latest edition !! Tiger Trap , GM Mamedov
Hello
today I'd like to present a recent win played online against a strong opponent, rated 2553.
But the credit should go to GM R. Mamedov @baku_boulevard
You may not be as familiar with him as @Hikaru or @MagnusCarlsen
but Rauf Mamedov is a fierce blitz player, ranked #12 on this site with a rating of 3086.
So here's the game (Italian Giuoco Piano) which inspired me, first the key positions and then the last moves to be replayed ( entire game here https://www.chess.com/games/view/13123762)
Note that Mamedov ( playing against Caruana in 2010 !) keeps his king in the center and queen on e2.
Next, we have the start of the attack
there's is no name for this set-up, so I named it " the Tiger Attack with g2-g4 ", you can see Mamedov over the board at bottom right in the picture below.
finally the 3rd key position in Mamedov-Caruana
This is remarkable because the king is still on e1 and the rook on a1 is not in play. But I highlighted above the white pieces in red which can coordinate to attack the black king through the g-file. We opened up g2-g4 and g4-g5 and since Black had played h7-h6, this made the attack faster.
Now the end of Caruana-Mamedov

now my 3 min game today is replayable here https://www.chess.com/game/live/62440825069
Position after move 11, looks familiar ?
In my game, my opponent tried d7-d6 and will soon play d6-d5. I made good use of the extra tempo following Mamedov's Tiger Attack.
next key position
in my game the bishops on b3 and e6 got exchanged. but I kept my king in the center and opened up the g-file. My active pieces are in the same spot as in the model game ( Mamedov-Caruana), I highlighted them in red and you can compare with the 2010 game.
and now the finish
as you can see I was able to crash through, not using the exact same finish but capitalizing on my attacking chances along the g-file. Please note that my opponent rating is currently well above mine (2553 vs 2405).
But this was a smooth win confirmed by Game Review Analysis
I wish I could take the credit for developing a great attack, but the entire trap and attack using g2-g4 was shown at top level by Rauf Mamedov @Baku_Boulevard.
So while tactics and endgame skills are important, opening knowledge is also part of the equation and here knowing just 1 model game (not dozen of moves and variations) and key ideas was sufficient.

thank you Mr Mamedov !!
