How can Bd2 help secure an opening advantage in the Ruy Lopez ?

This is obtained after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7 6. d3!? b5 7. Bb3 d6 8. Bd2!?

First of all Black cannot do Nc6-a5 followed by c7-c5. Second, White can play h3, a3,Nc3 followed by Nh4-f5 with kingside play.

Let's see how Magnus played this in Wijk-Aan-Zee this year against GM Vitiugov

Now Caruana used this yesterday in Norway chess agains Tari to win Armageddon. https://norwaychess.no

Here's the game

Caruana played h3 and a3, but then Nc3-e2-g3.

in the 3rd game, Fedoseev faced an opponent who tried Nc6-d8 followed by c7-c5 since a5 is protected. White won the game.

Would you give this variation a shot ?
