A trip to Shirley & Wythall
In the pelting rain, Daventry made the trip to Wythall to play Shirley A in the Leamington and District League, division one.
We were without our regular board one and also our regular board two from last season. That meant that yours truly was playing on board one (cue nosebleed).
Boards two to four were occupied in order by Andy Foulds (who lost), Kevin Bowman (who lost horribly) and his son, Harry Bowman (who put up a spirited fight and played a fine game, before losing). Harry should learn a lot from playing a decent player and he continues his development as a junior.
That meant the team lost. What was even more annoying was my own game - I've played better 5 minute chess if I am being honest! I got confused in the Scotch opening but actually seemed to have a decent position but couldn't hold it together.
My opponent ran extremely short on time which was good for me, considering I had done my best to completely blow a marginally better position, changing my strategy from "positional" to "queenside hack" in ridiculously embarassing fashion.
At one stage, my opponent missed mate in 21 (thanks Fritz!) but luckily for me, I carried on my own attack and my opponent blundered, allowing a mate in 8 (thanks Fritz, but I didn't need you to tell me that, I knew he was dead in the water after he played 36... R7h8??..... at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Here's my game - hopefully we'll have a stronger side out for our next match in a weeks' time!
