A very costly one move blunder
This game was played on 7th September 2011.
Congratulations go to Harry Bowman, aged 11, of Daventry Chess Club. Harry has been attending the club on a casual basis (his Dad, Kevin, is one of the members at the club) for a couple of years. Harry also represented Northamptonshire U11's on board 4 and has shown rapid improvement over the last 6-12 months.
I have worked with Harry at county tournaments and would like to claim some credit for his win over me last night. Unfortunately, I can't! Harry played very very well and, despite being the exchange down with a poor position, he never gave up.
I have maintained in other blog articles that chess coaches put their backsides on the line and this coach was well and truly dumped on his last night!
I am always happy to play junior players, especially my students, if it will help them improve. From time to time, this results in a defeat for a red faced coach. I hope this game hasn't damaged my own credibility.
The euphoria of his win (and probably tiredness as school has just started again), probably contributed to me getting revenge when we reversed colours but now is not the time to post a win against a junior player. Now is the time to simply say "well done Harry, keep up the good work!"
