A perfect tournament win with the Vienna Gambit!
This was my final match in my group in round 1 of the “Lower-rated Aussies 2021 Christmas Challenge” tournament. I was very happy to (i) have won this game, (ii) won using my favourite opening, the Vienna Gambit, (iii) and won perfectly with a 100% accuracy rating by Stockfish! This game is a great demonstration of why the intuitive move, Qe7 after accepting the Vienna Gambit can be catastrophic for black.
The Vienna Gambit is a very tricky line and can be very bad for the opponent who accepts the gambited pawn. That said, if you play the Vienna Gambit, you do need to be careful as white, as inaccurate play can result in the relative over-extension of your pawns and pieces being punished. This was my final game in round 1 of my group, and of the 8 games I managed to win 6 games, lost 1, and drew 1. Some of my opponents have a few games left, but I’m fairly sure that I’m the winner of this round in my group as it isn’t possible for the others to exceed my score. I’m pretty happy with the outcome. I’m looking forward to round 2!
I hope you enjoyed this video, and thanks for watching!
