In this video, I run the "Beginner Bot Gauntlet" - playing and defeating all 15 of the chess.com Beginner Bots from Martin (250) to Karim (850) in a single continuous playthrough! As part of theme for beginner players, I start each game with the king's pawn (1. e4) and then the queen's knight (2. Nc3), in the style of the Vienna Game. Technically, it's only the Vienna Game if Black responds on the first move with e5. There are a couple of exceptions to this, for instance, in the final game with Karim who always leads with the bad Duras Gambit (1... f5).
My reflections on the beginner bots?
- they are generally easier than human opponents at the same level on chess.com
- they often fall prey to forceful mate in 1 attacks so Scholar's Mate type set ups against the weak f-pawn can result in a quick win
- playing a less common opening often confuses the programming of the bots and result in very weird moves
- lower rated beginner bots often hang pieces, or won't capture pieces which are hung
