chess noob Quick Wins! is a series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins!  As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar's Mate and the Fool's Mate, but neither of these show up in real games.  However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.

The following is simply a sublime game submitted by one of my subscribers @Bogo-IndianaJones on chess.com. It's a gambit against the Queen's Pawn Opening that I feel I need to learn more about, the Budapest Gambit (1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5).  They managed 100% accuracy, and a delicious, smothered mate on move 8!

This was a game of 3-minute blitz and my subscriber had the Black pieces. With perhaps a similar idea to the Englund Gambit, tension builds against White's pawn that is a little bit too forward on e5.  First one knight, then the second, and then a queen. White has only two defenders so on move 7, plays (7. a3) to counterattack Black's bishop on b4. Black then plays a devious tactical trap with (7... Ngxe5) which psychologically seems to be giving White a choice. Do they take the knight on e5, which is defended two ways by pieces of equivalent value, or capture the seemingly hanging bishop on b4?

The natural move is of cause to take the bishop, but this surprisingly blunders mate!  Because (8... Nd3#) gives check and reveals a discovered pin of the e-pawn against the king with the queen on e7.  Smothered checkmate! GG!

Hi!  I'm vitualis, the chess noob, and I run the "Adventures of a Chess Noob" YouTube channel and blog.  I'm learning and having fun with chess!

I restarted playing chess recently after my interest was rekindled by the release of "The Queen's Gambit" on Netflix.  I mostly play 1 or 2 games a day, and am trying to improve (slowly!).  I document some of my games and learning experiences on my blog and YouTube channel from the perspective of a beginner-intermediate player!
