Historically, chess bots and engines were completely algorithmic. So when Deep Mind, now owned by Google, created AlphaZero, a neural network based engine that crushed Stockfish 8, which was the strongest chess engine at the time, we entered a new age in chess engines.
Chessnut's promotional material - and this is straight from their Evo website as of the time the this was recorded in late-June 2023 - markets the ability to create custom opponents by training a neural network to use with the Leela Chess Zero engine. The idea is that you'll be able to upload historical games onto Chessnut's training server, it'll use those games to create a customised neural network weights module, that can be optionally used when playing a bot match on the EVO with Leela Chess Zero. The bot will play in the style of the training games!
In this video, I train a "vitualis the Chess Noob" bot from 200 of my games on Lichess. The bot indeed does play my openings - the Vienna Gambit with White, and the Ponziani-Steinitz Gambit against the Knight Attack in the Italian Game! Brilliant!
