This is the fourth episode in a five part series playing, and hopefully defeating the all new cat meme chess bots unleashed by chess.com in 2023!
Catspurrov rated 1400, is the most sophisticated of the cat meme bots. A suave and sleek Russian Blue, he knows how to enjoy the finer things in life - such as, having a coffee before chess!
We start with the "black coffee" of chess openings (1. e4 e5), and, of course, I play the Vienna Game. Rather than going down the Main Line, Catspurrov demonstrates his aesthetics by playing the Anderssen Defense. I start to smile - does Catspurrov know the Giraffe Attack? (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Bc5 3. Qg4).
The Giraffe Attack is of course, one of my favourite openings in chess - it sounds hilarious, and it gives the opportunity for early massive king-side attacking tactics, with the queen already on the g-file. This is especially the case if the black king castles kingside, and Catspurrov castled unusually early on move 4.
On move 5, I decided to attempt a super-aggressive stance. I played (5. d4), lashing out with my pawn and opening the dark square diagonal for my bishop. By sacrificing the d-pawn, I've set a massive gamble. I've turned Black's attention to my queenside, baited them to capture material for tempo. Objectively, this is a terrible plan according to Stockfish with the evaluation at [-4.5] and worse!
However, it ended up working! Catspurrov defended their g7 pawn by a backwards knight move to e8. I needed some time to re-route my knight - from c3 to d5 to e3 and then finally f5, to provide a third attacker. And to achieve this, I used my queenside pieces, the pawn, first the b-pawn, and then the rook on a1, as bait! Basically, a triple gambit!
Catspurrov found the "hanging" rook on a1 irresistible and captured it on move 10. This gave me the tempo I needed, with checkmate on move 14! GG.
Tomorrow, I face off against the mysterious "Mittens"!
