SMOTHERED CHECKMATE in 7! Englund Gambit - chess noob Quick Wins! #5
#EnglundGambit
chess noob Quick Wins! is a new series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins! As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar's Mate and the Fool's Mate, but neither of these show up in real games. However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.
This is a lovely, smothered mate on move 7 out of the Englund Gambit Accepted, and Main Line (1. d4 e5 2. dxe5 Nc6 3. Nc6 Qe7). On move 4, my opponent plays a good and interesting move (4. g3), which allows for me to immediately capture back the centre pawn on e5 (4... Nxe5).
Next, they play the somewhat baffling (5. b4), which hangs a mate in 1 (with 5... Nxf3#), but I sadly didn't see this in the game! I captured the free b-pawn instead (5... Qxb4+) to which my opponent kicked my queen with the c-pawn, and I brought my queen back to the e-file (6. c3 Qe4).
And then, the final move of the game, my opponent hangs another mate in 1 (7. Nbd2) and I saw it this time! My knight jumps forward (7... Nd3#) - a smothered mate with my opponent's e-pawn pin to the king! Beautiful!
