The Giraffe Attack

#viennagame #giraffeattackThere are a number of animal themed openings in chess. Some of the better known ones include the Elephant Gambit, the Crab Opening, and the Dragon variation of the Sicilian Defence. Today, I had the opportunity to play the hilariously named Giraffe Attack in the Vienna Game, which is a dubious queen move, on move 3.

As can be seen by the evaluation bar in this game, the Giraffe Attack is probably not objectively good, as some of the intuitive responses by black results in serious problems for white. However, I like to imagine that the shock of the psychological impact of having the queen capture the pawn on g7 on move 4 is analogous to being attacked by a giraffe! At least in the beginner-intermediate level.

I hope you found this video interesting, and thanks for watching!

Hi!  I'm vitualis, the chess noob (aka chessnoob64), and I run the "Adventures of a Chess Noob" YouTube channel and blog.  I'm learning and having fun with chess!

I restarted playing chess recently after my interest was rekindled by the release of "The Queen's Gambit" on Netflix.  I mostly play 1 or 2 games a day, and am trying to improve (slowly!).  I document some of my games and learning experiences on my blog and YouTube channel from the perspective of a beginner-intermediate player!
