chess noob Quick Wins! is a series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins!  As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar's Mate and the Fool's Mate, but neither of these show up in real games.  However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.

This was a rather delicious, smothered checkmate on move 10 from a Vienna Gambit Accepted (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4 exf4), something that is rather unusual!

The game progressed down a well-trodden path, with Black attempting to pin the advanced e-pawn to my king to avoid having to undevelop their knight. This, of course, doesn't work after the symmetrical queen move Qe2, which unpins the pawn.  Black undevelops their knight, and we then both develop our other knights.  So far, very normal.

On move 7, Black makes the first uncommon move (7... g5) which is an understandable move from the King's Gambit perspective but is a mistake here [+4.4].  I play the thematic and power (8. Nd5) and Black's queen is forced back to her home square (8... Qd8).

And then on move 9, Black makes another understandable but precipitous mistake with (9... Nge7).  Black followed the opening principle of scrambling to develop pieces, but in doing so, their king was smothered!  My next, and final move (10. Nf6#) - the Black king is assassinated on his throne, surrounded by his army! GG!

Hi!  I'm vitualis, the chess noob, and I run the "Adventures of a Chess Noob" YouTube channel and blog.  I'm learning and having fun with chess!

I restarted playing chess recently after my interest was rekindled by the release of "The Queen's Gambit" on Netflix.  I mostly play 1 or 2 games a day, and am trying to improve (slowly!).  I document some of my games and learning experiences on my blog and YouTube channel from the perspective of a beginner-intermediate player!
