My longest chess game I have ever played!

My longest chess game I have ever played!

This is a story I just recently wrote in school! I was in 3rd grade when I played this game and now I am in 5th!

I had been staring and studying the board for hours and my time was getting low: five minutes. I could barely keep my eyes open, it was the latest I had ever stayed up playing chess, 10:11. And then something happened that had never happened before....

5 hours and 11 minutes earlier

A few players came into the room. That must be my opponent, wow he’s almost as tall as a giant! What? He has chips in his bag, no fair, I thought. “Dad, you can go now, see you in a while,” I said urging him to leave.”

“See ya,” he said and rushed out of the room. My opponent sat down.

“Hi, what's your name,” I said wondering if I would recognize it.

“I’m Andrew, now let's get going,'' he paused, “Good luck.” Huh, I don’t recognize his name, even though he’s so highly rated, maybe he hadn’t played in a tournament in awhile? I don’t know.

I kindly replied, “Good luck. "I took one more glance around the small room; around half of the 50 boards had players sitting in the chairs starting their games. I then saw the tournament director who was staring at me, surprised I wasn’t moving. His desk was as messy as my desk at home! And then the bookshelf right beside where I was sitting. It covered the whole left wall and it was filled with opening, middle, and endgame play!

And then I started playing… I played the scotch opening: e4, e5, Nf3, Nc6, d4, exd4, Nxd4, Nf6, Nxc6, bxc6, and then Bd3. He had played it perfectly and the game was even.

Once the positions got more complicated, we both started taking more time. Every turn he thought of a good move and then he stood up and walked around behind me and he then thought about what I would do. It was also incredibly annoying.

He looked in his big black bag and pulled out a bag of chips, flaming Cheetos. The burning smell filled the room. As he touched the first Cheeto the grease was all over his hand. He then put the Cheeto in his mouth and said, "Mmmmm." I shook in disgust as if someone had just thrown up next to me. Is that even allowed, I thought. When he made his next move the grease got all over the pieces. I sighed.

OK, time to get focused Qa6, attacking the pawn on a2. If I played Nc3 guarding the pawn then he would play Qa5 attacking my weak pawn on d5 and the Night I just moved to c3. So that wouldn’t work. Hmmm… Is the pawn gonna fall? Hmmm… OK… I breathed slowly. If I lose this pawn… UGH… Wait… Qb3, Qa5+ still attacking the pawn on d5, losing it.

Wait, let me see can I counterattack… Qc3! Attacking the Knight on c6. Then he’d play Rc8 threatening a Knight move attacking my queen and still on my pawn. Hmmm… Bc4! Defending the a2 pawn while blocking the rook’s line! Then I made my move, Qc3.

The queens were now off the board and now I knew it, it was the endgame! I had a Knight, Rook, and 3 pawns and he had a Bishop, Rook, and 3 pawns. He started pushing me back. We were blitzing it out because our time was getting low.

The pawns were stuck, in a chain of pawns, but luckily my Knight was defending the weakest pawn, on a black square! This means that his bishop can't attack it because it's on a white square. This is why I also placed my rook on a black square! Then I shuffled my king around. He tried to bring his king into my side of the board and take my pawns, but my rook made a force field blocking his king from advancing. 10 minutes later…

Wow, this is almost as tiring as a sport if not more tiring than one! I yawned. I had been staring and studying the board for hours and my time was getting low 5 minutes.

The pieces stared at me as my hand drew closer to the board, The pieces laughed at me in disgust as I hesitantly moved my hand back worried to death that I was going to make a mistake. The clock was shocked that I wasn’t making a move, it drained slowly and then it screamed at me, MOVE!

I started speeding up. I was so tired. Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever played a game with more than 3 people watching! I thought. There was another game going and the people were going from board to board seeing what was happening.

My eyes were stuck on the board unless I looked at the clock. We kept blitzing and blitzing it out, The game must have been at least 100 moves so far. Andrew grinned at me and his eyes were like fire, and whenever I offered a draw I felt like he wanted to roar like a tiger. Wow, this guy must really want to win, he keeps giving me an angry look. But then the game ended before any of us knew it had...

And then 5 moves later I realized what happened. “fi-fif-fift-fifty move rule,” I shouted!!!!!!!!!!! stuttering along the way.  And he looked at his notation and he realized it was too. He grinned at me and shook my hand hard and sighed and said good game.

When my game had finished my dad shouted at me, "This is why chess is a sport, and wow, wow, wow, that's incredible that you played a 5 hour and 11-minute game!" At that moment I realized that chess is a super competitive and tiring game which makes it a sport!
