My Chess Openings
I've finally decided it. I'm sticking to 3 openings and I hope to master them as much as I can.
I struggled a lot at the beginning of what to play. Ruy Lopez, the London, the Sicilian Defense and many more openings swirled in my head. What to play what to play. I wanted openings that were simple and straight to the point. Openings that were solid and would allow me to focus on becoming a better middlegame/endgame player. So after a few months of messing around, watching youtube videos and listening to the advice of others, I've decided on 3 main openings that I will focus on. Feel free to tell me why I'm wrong in the comments and maybe I'll explain my reasoning further.
White:
The Vienna. Alright, alright. I watch GothamChess on Youtube. He convinced me to play the Vienna and I took the bait. I believe in the opening though and I like the possibility to play a gambit in the opening.
Black:
Caro Kann. Yesss another GothamChess suggestion but this mainly came from me playing 1. e4 and being met with c6. As an e4 player, I feel that playing the Caro Kann helps me play better AGAINST the Caro Kann. It's a solid opening as well and only has 3 main variations. "All pawns and no hope" has yet to deter me from sticking with this response to 1. e4.
Dutch Defense. This is my most recent undertaking as a response to 1. d4. I previously would just play d5 and stick to main opening theory (aka "wing it"). This worked against some openings and failed against others. The Dutch Defense feels like much more of a solid gameplan against 1. d4 and eases my conscious when playing with the black pieces.
And that's it! I haven't prepared for more off-beat openings yet such as the Reti or 1. c4 but I imagine those will come in time. If you haven't heard of these openings, I'd definitely check them out! There are many great resources on Youtube and many great books written on these openings.
