Introduction

The chess community is mourning a great loss, that of Daniel Naroditsky, also known as "Danya". Danya was a chess prodigy, a strong player, a streamer, a YouTuber, a commentator, a writer, a historian, and I am sure I missed many things. More importantly, he was a son and a good friend to many. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Danya will be remembered for many different reasons. For those, like me, who did not know him personally but followed him online, he will be remembered for his enthusiasm for chess, his great commentary, and his instructive YouTube videos. Apart from this, he was a very strong Grand Master, with an incredible peak FIDE rating of 2647. By going through some of his games, I hope to contribute to him being remembered as the strong player he was.

The Chess Prodigy

At a young age, Danya already showed how strong a player he was. For instance, in 2007, he won the Under-12 World Youth Championship. The game below was played in 2005 during the Under-10 World Youth Championship. From a positionally advantageous position, Danya moves to a deadly attack on black's king. Enjoy the game:

The Dynamic Genius

Danya's repertoire demonstrates that he was not afraid to take on complex, dynamic positions. Among his favorite opening weapons, the King's Indian Defence figures prominently. The following is a dynamic masterpiece: Danya is not afraid of leaving pieces hanging, and with precise calculation, he hunts down the king to claim the victory.

The Positional Genius

Apart from the King's Indian Defense, Danya championed the Jobava-London with white, especially on blitz and rapid, but also in classical chess, as in the game below. He even wrote a course on this opening together with his good friend GM Olexandr Bortnyk. In the following game, Danya makes not one, but two exchange sacrifices to gain deadly control of the light-squares and a positionally crushing position.

As the last game, I needed to include the following positional masterpiece. It is especially instructive that, despite appearances, the opening of the queenside favors white rather than black. Danya perfectly understood this and masterfully pressed black's weaknesses: b5, e5, and the c-file.

Conclusion

The chess community is not only mourning such a great loss, but is also angry at the injustice he suffered. Many raised on social media asking for justice from the relevant authorities. While the community's response rose to the occasion, the authorities' response so far is a bit disappointing, to say the least. As a community, we need to hold those responsible accountable for it and make sure it won't happen again. Wherever you are, Danya, rest assured, we will ensure justice will be served.
