Passed pawns. Just what are they? The answer is pretty simple passed pawns are a pawn or pawns that have no enemy pawns to either side of them like this.

This means that the pawn is free to slowly inch forward as pawns do to promotion.

Creating passed pawns, This is a very annoying concept in endgame knowledge cause it takes forever to remember.

In both lines the pawn becomes passed and you win!. However...this is with two pawns which is moderately simple. Now with three pawns. Which is much harder...and I may or may not have had to calculate this myself cause I hate endgames with a passion.

Promotions.

Everyone reading this should know how to play chess...And if you know how to play chess you should know what promotions are. But we still need to put this in the blog as it has pawns in it. *Sigh*

So what is a promotion. A promotion is when a pawn or the enemies pawn reaches the other end of the board. When this happens you have a choice to promote the pawn to a Queen, Rook, Bishop and Unicorn...Uh knight.

Almost always you want to promote to a Queen as it's the most powerful piece. However sometimes you want to "Underpromote"

In this position white is winning. But white has a choice, What do they promote to? Most would promote to a queen, Which is certainly still winning, However stockfishy says that the best move resulting in mate in 7 is to promote the pawn to a knight resulting in mate in 7 opposing to mate in 9 when promoting to a queen.
