Because I had the benefit of an excellent academic education I am capable of independent thought and reasoning. In 2024 there will be major elections in both USA and UK. Think about your vote. Is the most popular candidate full of hateful rhetoric your best option? Whatever you decide exercise your democratic right and VOTE!
(10/8/23) I heartily agree. And I am extremely disappointed in intelligent people who seem to be incurious or uninterested in any 'bigger picture' or historical context for controversial matters. "There is always 'more' to understand!"
"I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn't learn something from him."

I will ponder that thought, Nancy. I would not be happy to see anyone killed or destroyed, but I would definitely wish them to get the punishment to fit their crime. Upon reconsideration, I think that hate should be reserved for the heinous acts or things, rather than people.
But hate is within ourselves tying us up with a very intense emotion which can totally absorb us. If I think of the worst people in the world, i could quite happily kill them or see them destroyed, but I still wouldn’t hate them. They wouldn’t be worth it
I agree with you, Nancy, but some things are so heinous that "dislike" -- even "intensely dislike" -- is way too weak to express the feeling. Hate should be reserved for the truly dreadful. Likewise, we throw out the word Love too readily. "Oh, I LOVE pizza!" Then what word is there left to use with the man or woman in your arms at the end of day?
"There has always been in our national experience a type of mind which elevates hatred to a kind of creed; for this mind, group hatreds take a place in politics similar to the class struggle in some other modern societies."
― Richard Hofstadter* (1916-1970)
We had a large box of chess books, and Capablanca was represented among them. But when my husband died, I had thousands (no exaggeration) of books, records, CD's, and even reel-to-reel tapes to dispose of. A huge wealth of knowledge had to go. There was no way I could take all that with me to a small condo!
I believe you have probably learned more than you think. Perhaps you should consider mentoring some young students... Have you read any of his books, particularly 'Chess Fundamentals?' It's a classic.
"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect has intended us to forego their use."
― Galileo Galilei* (1564-1642)
Chess.com keeps monkeying with the way Club pages show up (among other things). That makes it difficult for us geezers to keep up... Sorry I haven't been paying attention lately. Too much confusion in the world, and a lot of it is deliberate. Some members have suggested that I post the various 'quotations' from my home page Notes to keep things interesting and thoughtful... I'll try if you guys will add your own thoughts, as well. The past offers lots of 'food for thought!'
