Coach, please do me a favor and send that quote by Thomas Sowell to Ron DeSantis. Educated though he is, he seems to have no understanding of the importance of history.
"There are different kinds of interpretations of history and different schools of philosophy. All of them have contributed something to human progress, but none of them has been able to give the world a basic philosophy embracing the whole progress of science and establishing the life of man upon the abiding foundation of Fact."
― Alfred Korzybski. Manhood of Humanity: The Science and Art of Human Engineering (1921).
I have a book "Philosophy Made Simple". I found that title amusing. There is nothing simple about it. So many different ideas and thoughts on some really weird things.
CREDO:
'Whatever' I 'believe' or think I 'know' is (at the very least) incomplete, and quite possibly wrong!
'Whatever' you 'believe' or think you 'know' is (at the very least) incomplete, and quite possibly wrong!
'Whatever' anyone 'believes' or thinks they 'know' is (at the very least) incomplete, and quite possibly wrong!
"Why is history important? Without history, many people have no idea how many of today's half-baked ideas have been tried, again and again - and have repeatedly led to disaster. Most of these ideas are not new. They are just being recycled with re-treaded rhetoric."
― Thomas Sowell*
(3/1/23) "One of the painfully sobering realizations that come from reading history is the utter incompetence that is possible among leaders of whole nations and empires - and the blind faith that such leaders can nevertheless inspire among the people who are enthralled by their words or their posturing."
― Thomas Sowell
Indeed! ...as many are without even understanding it. Once one becomes aware of the limitations of languages, symbols, etc., and realize there are tools to overcome those limitations, one may begin to see a 'bigger picture'. But it's difficult without a wider awareness and the proper tools. Modern technological progress is now advancing much faster than most people's ability to understand all the consequences. This has dire effects, as we are currently experiencing world-wide.
(1/6/23) KEY PRINCIPLE: "Non-Identity." A 'word' is NOT 'the thing,' a map is NOT the territory, a symbol is NOT the thing symbolized, perception is not reality... There are no 'identity relationships' in nature. No two things are entirely identical to one another... Change is the only constant, but our language, maps, and perceptions give us the mistaken impression of stability and stasis.
(1/5/23) KEY PRINCIPLE: “Non-Allness.” One can never say all there is to say about anything, a map can never depict a territory in its entirety, we can never perceive all there is to perceive about our environment.
Oh, dear! I so sincerely meant to attend the Zoom meeting of last Saturday, but I got called away to help a caterer with a job that was more than she could handle. Today I was busy, too. Dare I hope for next Saturday?
Are you a Jordan Peterson fan, Coach? I read his "12 Rules...." and though I initially agreed with much of what he said, I quickly became disillusioned. I've forgotten now what impressed and then dismayed. I should have another read, perhaps. Right now I'm in the middle of Stevenson's "Just Mercy."
(12/20/22) Dr. Jordan B. Peterson has a number of fascinating public lectures on the subject, available on his YouTube channel or directly on YouTube. Search Jordan Peterson Bible Series.
It really gives an excellent history of how this book has influenced the history of the western world. The evolution of the bible is pretty interesting from a historical view.
