I used to be a fan, but White does not always co-operate.

I am a huge fan of this opening. Is this group still active?

They do, but it is +0.2 just if you play it completely right. It's like everything. If you completely calculate every move, you will get either a draw in most cases, or something like a mate in 500. But noone, not even a computer, can calculate this far. So it's just a try to calculate as far as possible, which, if you calculate as far as possible, ends in 0.2 or something. But only because engines say, it doesn't have to be like this because nobody can play like 100 engine moves in a game.

Engines don't understand the Traxler. And their initial evaluations on move 5 are worse than useless. 5.Nxf7 was solved to a draw before you were born.

And what is the bad news about it? This is normal knowledge of a traxler player I'd say.

I'm alive here too, I prefer Bxf7+, because it is easier to handle at my level, but I probably could also play Nxf7, because on my level noone knows the theory...

There is only so much you can say about the Wilkes-Barre. It has been pretty well discussed in the threads. I play it a lot. it is a good surprise weapon against anyone who has never seen it. Frank played it during the Pog champs, and had a good position which he blew.

5.Nxf7 is a draw, yes. White is better after 5.Bxf7+, but probably not enough to win.

Here are some lines from Gotham Chess after Bxf7+: https://youtu.be/v1jkj-HPLdw?t=578

After Bxf7 to start with you should try the strange looking Ke7 rather than Kf8, if you haven't already.

iirc 6 Bd5 is actually the worst retreat for White; both 6 Bb3 and 6 Bc4 are better

I looked at the line after Bxf7 with houdini. It thinks if white retreats anywhere but d5 it is about equal if you let it run long enough, but you need to know some really convoluted lines to make that happen. Computer thinks Bd5 retreat is just flat out winning for white. When I play in tournaments higher rated opponents will typically select this line unfortunately, so I'm not sure of the validity of playing the Traxler above say 1600'ish.

Hello guys, can anyone show me/point me in the direction of correct theory after Bxf7+? I just recently encountered it and honestly it looks to me like black is losing :/

No you shouldn't assume Bxf7+, but you should be very prepared for it. As much as Traxler players don't like Bxf7+ (I view it as declining a gambit that if accepted usually means an easy win), Bxf7+ is far from a refutation of the Traxler. In fact, even Anatoly Karpov could only get a draw playing this line!

I'm preparing diligently for the dream of one day returning to over the board play. As an OTB weapon, I'm wondering how to see the Traxler. Should I assume that my opponent will play Bxf7+ in a tournament setting?
