Hi everyone, I wanna thank josh for making me admin. I’m gonna talk about some good openings I think everyone should try.
(1) Giuoco Piano
everyone knows the Giuoco Piano, it’s the first opening everyone learns (most likely). I would recommend this opening to beginners, but I would stop playing it at intermediate level
(2) when you start getting to the intermediate level, I would recommend trying new openings. The Ruy Lopez is a good intermediate opening, and can be useful
(3) Queen’s Gambit
now, 1.e4 gets boring. Even though it’s still well played amongst good players, it’s time to switch. I recommend the playing the Queens Gambit, as 1. D4 leads to very interesting positions.
(4) 1. f4 and 1. c4
this is more for advanced players, because f4 and c4 can be tricky but they can lead to positive results. As many people at the advanced level still play 1. e4 you can catch lots not knowing their lines to respond to c4 or f4.
Honorable mentions:
Jobava London, very good opening. I play it myself, from a dare from @rychessmaster1 and it’s worked very well for me. I highly recommend you to try it as well.
The Bongcloud: invented by Lenny Bongcloud, this opening is a fun way to try chess. It’ll really confuse your opponents in bullet (if you play it). But don’t play it in rapid, or else you’ll lose.
1. Nf3: this move can lead to lots of openings. (1. e4, 1. d4, 1. c4, 1. g3, 1. b3). Starting with Nf3 basically gives you a chance to see what your opponent plays, then choose the opening that’s fit.
1. g3: Fianchetto the bishop, then bring your mighty warriors out. This gives you a chance to not develop a bishop to c4, b5 etc but to put it on g2 which gives a solid structure for the bishop. It controls the diagonal, so watch out, your opponent could accidentally blunder a rook with b6. This makes a better safety on the king when short castling (0-0).
1. b3: same idea but usually for long castle (0-0-0). This controls the diagonal but your opponent has a good chance of developing on kingside which makes it worse than 1. g3. Nevertheless it is still worthy.
