4 Player Chess - problem drawing arrows - SOLVED (read end of post for solution!)

When playing 4 Player Chess, I was unable to get arrows to be drawn when selecting pieces on the board.  I could only get highlighted circles to appear.

I'm not sure if anyone else has had the same problem I recently had.  I thought it would be helpful if I posted a solution, just in case anyone else ever encounters it.

I contacted chess.com support and communicated back and forth a few times with Amelia, who was extremely patient and very helpful!  happy.png

She suggested to make sure I have the feature "Right Button Draw Arrows and Highlights" under the "Live Chess" settings enabled (see picture below - yellow rectangle highlighted).  When I first went into my settings, this option was not present.  Confused, I emailed back and inquired why it was not an option on my screen.

Amelia told me to ensure I had "Beta Chess" enabled to see this option.  To test out Chess.com Beta, click the link below.

Turn on the Beta setting here: https://www.chess.com/settings/beta

Credit to Amelia from chess.com support for the information (two links) above.

After following the above noted steps, the problem still persisted.  Finally, I had an epiphany moment and decided to try accessing chess.com on a different Internet browser, other than the one I use 99% of the time for chess.

Traditionally I use "Opera" for web browsing.  However, I tried Firefox as an alternative to try and solve my ongoing dilemma with the arrows not showing up.

Not sure why, but...

SUCCESS!!!  IT WORKED!!!  happy.png

I will have the 4pc manager take a look.

Currently 4 Player Chess has its own settings modal. To change them you should open https://www.chess.com/4-player-chess and click "Gear" icon (top right).

However, with any settings you should be able to draw arrows. The settings can make the arrows transparent, but cannot turn them off.

Please tell me what Opera version do you have? I just tested in 58.0.3135.127, the result:

Perhaps you have some old Opera version or browser add-on's.

To test arrows please open https://www.chess.com/4-player-chess , press "A" on keyboard (it is a shortcut of Analysis Board). Right click should draw a black circle, right click+drag a black arrow. If you'll press and hold "1" on keyboard, the arrow will be red, "2" - blue, "3" - yellow, "4" - green.

During games you don't need to press "1", "2", ..., the arrows will always have the color of your pieces.

@jdcannon Thank you!  happy.png

@BabYagun Thank you for your detailed and easy to follow explanation.  I followed your instructions carefully and the problem unfortunately still occurs.  My responses to your advice is below.

Operating System (Microsoft Windows 10 Version 1809 for x64-based Systems)

Internet Browser (Opera Version 58.0.3135.127)

I do not have any "ad-ons" installed.  I have an ad blocker, which is built into Opera.  Have tried turning it off, but the arrows still do not show up in black colour.  Do have antivirus installed (Kaspersky Internet Security), but do not think that would interfere with the arrows because they appear when I hold down the 1, 2, 3, 4 numerical values.

4 Player Chess Settings

Press and hold arrows works when I hold down the 1, 2, 3, and 4 numerical keys on keyboard.

Right click mouse and black circle works, however, when I drag cursor no arrow appears.

This is a VERY rough estimate, but I would say out of every 100 times I try to make arrows appear while using the Opera Internet browser, I've successfully managed to have it work a couple of times, but not on a consistent basis.  A few (minimal) times while playing a team match and a few times while testing the steps you advised me to do in the "analysis mode".  For example, based on the screenshot below, I tested 36 times and the black arrows successfully showed up 3 times (8% success rate).

Formally chess.com supports only these browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, MS Edge and also IE11 (not fully). Opera is not in this list. But arrows work in Opera for me. I will create a support ticket and we'll investigate it when one of the developers will have time. In the meantime, please use other browser.

To help us investigate this, please press Ctrl+Shift+J in Opera, try to draw a black arrow a few times, make a screenshot and send me a message with that screenshot. Don't post it here, please. Thank you.

@BabYagun  Thank you for your quick reply.  Will follow your suggested steps and send you a screenshot.

Back in April I posted a forum topic about drawing arrows not working in 4 Person Chess in the Opera web browser.  I wanted to update you and let you know I have resolved the issue.  I am conveying how I solved the problem to you, in case anyone else ever asks about it.

My original post to refresh your memory.

I was commenting in the following forum, with user @I_AM_Sher_Locked.

@I_AM_Sher_Locked suggested to turn off a specific feature within Opera settings.  I followed these instructions and I am now able to draw arrows in 4 PC.

I forgot Opera has a search box in the settings section to make it easier to find things.  I typed in the word "mouse" and I turned off the highlighted blue setting below.  Works fine now.  Not sure why that would be on by default.

@Jonani Thanks for that! I was wondering why the arrows weren't working on opera and found this from google. As I also use opera 99,9% of the time I didn't really like switching to another browser whenever  i wanted to play chess.

@haiperrr  You're very welcome!   Glad my experience was able to help another member of the site.  I've been using Opera as my main browser for the past couple of years and I share your sentiment about not wanting to change to another browser.
