Ahab Chess

This is a pretty goofy idea for a variant, but I think it would create some really interesting gameplay and add an extra challenge.

The name "Ahab Chess" comes from a wicked king of Israel in the Bible (named Ahab, of course). In 1 Kings 22:29-38, it tells of an event when Ahab went to war with another country, and he disguised himself as a regular soldier. When the enemy army realized that the "king" up in the chariot was the king of Judah, not Israel, they were confused and didn't know what to do. However, Ahab was struck at random, and ended up dying.

Now that I've finished that little Bible history lesson, perhaps you see where this is going.

My idea is that the board would have a standard chess setup, and at the beginning of the game, each player selects any one of his pieces (even a pawn if he really wants to) to be his royal piece. The only piece that cannot be royal is the king (in the story, the enemy realized that the king was just a decoy). [EDIT: The Queen would be prevented from being royal as well, because of how difficult it would be to capture a royal queen. This suggestion came from @noahfavelo in the comments below.] Neither player would be able to know which piece has been selected as a royal. This would be a capture-the-royal variant, so you can knowingly put yourself in "check" pretending your piece isn't the royal, taking the risk of possibly losing, or just throwing your opponent off.

What do you think? Is this another dumb idea of mine? XD or would this be good?

So nice idea!

It like a fake soldier!

I just played an over-the-board game of this with my little brother. I’ll post it here soon for people to look at. My little bro beat me! He played well.

Play on computer or on real board?

Green_Sleeves

On a real board. I took a picture after each time black moved. It happened that throughout the whole game, the decoy king was never in danger for more than one move, so I can post the whole game as a normal game.

Umm, did both of u make the secret sign of real king so that you couldn't cheat. For example if you kill the hidden king then your partner will decline that it wasn't king.

Green_Sleeves

Yes. We each put a small piece of blue tape in the bottom of the Ahab king while the opponent had his back turned.

I posted it from my perspective playing. I’m black, my little bro is white. My Ahab is the b pawn, his Ahab is his light square bishop.

Making your pawn ahab might not be the best idea. Usually you cannot move a pawn out of danger. It adds an interesting twist for sure

Green_Sleeves

Yeah, I wasn’t sure how it would shake out. I picked a pawn to make me free to trade any major piece I wanted. It was an interesting test for sure, and I definitely like having the option to pick pawn. But it’s definitely risky.

My favorite move is 20. … b5 😆

You played 29. ... Nd5 made ur opponent suspected.

Green_Sleeves

He was going to take the pawn anyway, wasn’t really much I could do. He also said that he didn’t even register in his brain that he was able to take the knight 😆
