Avalon is a whole lot of fun.
Agreed, but you should try the steam online multiplayer Mindnight, as it is approximately the same thing (with a special gamemode as well), that doesn't require getting 4-7 other friends over. Plus, of course, Secret Hitler.
Chess! ♟
Yeah, no other board game will ever be better than chess
But there is a card game that does: One Night Ultimate Werewolf and its extra card expansions/ base games, One Night Ultimate Werewolf: Daybreak, One Night Ultimate Vampire, and One Night Ultimate Alien.

Never heard of it. I think I'm going to find out about it, if you say it's better than chess

It's a social deduction game like mafia or Ultimate Werewolf, but faster, better, and playable with a smaller number of players.
Catan is a really good family game, especially if you have all the expansion (like what you said). It's totally worth it.
Oh, my, where to start.
First, you mix up the cards and set them in a jumbled pile (face down). Next, everyone draws an odd number of cards (same number for each person, we usually play five).
Next, starting pairs are made, take effect, and are placed in a pile.
Then whomever played a pair of jacks (or has a jack if none were played, or just pick someone if no jacks have been picked up), askes someone for a card they have, if they say yes, the asker selects one card at random from the other person*s hand. If they get a pair, it takes effect, if you get what you want, you get to go again. If they do not have what you want, you draw from the pile and then play proceeds as if you had acquired that card from someone*s hand.
When your turn is over, the person to your right goes.
The goal is to remove all cards from your hand. Once this is done, you can be brought back into play (by drawing cards) or someone else can tie you (by going out) until the end of the next player*s turn.
When you have 1 card in your hand, you must say *Uno* or draw 2 cards.
Pairs have special abilities when they are made:
A. Turn your hand around (so the other players can see it), until the end of YOUR NEXT TURN
2. Everyone draws 1 card
3. Target player (you can target yourself) draws 1 card
4. All players discard a card (it is put back into the draw pile and mixed in)
5. You lose a turn
6. You draw 3 cards
7. Reverse play direction
8. The next player*s turn is skipped
9. The next player draws 2 cards
10. The next player draws 4 cards
J. You gain an extra turn (or steal the current player*s turn, if the pair is made on another player*s turn)
Q. Target player discards their hand (see card 4) and then draws 5 cards
K. Target player switches hands with you
Joker: ALL players discard their hands (see card 4) and draw 5 cards
Extra: (Any extra, normally-backed cards that come with a deck but are not meant to use) This card has no pair, and is called the *Free Sticker*. When this card is in your hand, no matter what card you are asked for, you answer *Yes* (whether or not you have the target card). If you ask for the Free Sticker, the other player must answer *Yes* (though, since there is only 1 of it, they obviously do not have it).
Pairs made at the same time (such as starting pairs, or when many cards are drawn), they are played in this order: 7, 2, 9, 10, 6, 3, 4, Q, K, Joker, 8, 5, J, A.
When more cards must be drawn than are left in the draw pile (a frequent end of game problem), a number of pairs (from the bottom of the pair pile, so the pairs made first are the first added back in) equal to the difference between how much must be drawn and the number left are added to the draw pile, BEFORE the person draws any cards.
In a 2 player game, a pair of 7s has no effect, and 8s are effectively an extra turn.
It is extremely helpful to have someone smart (who can easily memorize all of the rules) in the group of players, as some people have trouble keeping the rules straight. This person becomes the game arbiter, and makes it playable.
Strategy:
I will not tell you how to play, but a few pointers:
- Being the person who knows the rules inside and out is invaluable, it has allowed me to win almost every game
- Manipulation and talking are extremely useful
- A good poker face is a must in groups that study your face to find the right card
- Never forget to shuffle your hand often to prevent people from figuring out where cards are in your hand
- Counting cards is not only allowed, but encouraged!
Good luck. The first few games may take around an hour (I usually play in a group of 4-6, but have played larger and smaller groups, for 2-10 players), but we have them consistently down to 20-30 minutes per game, and we play until all but one player has gone out (playing until the first winner may reduce play time by a lot).
Credit where credit is due:
- Based on Go Fish
- Influenced by Uno
- One of my friends came up with the rule for Aces
- I came up with most of the rules
