Archon Shah: Missing In Action

Our Archon Shah (member shahhussainkcl) has been missing for quite a while. His last login to chess.com was 29-Sep-2012.

He used to be a very active member. We dare not speculate about what might have happened, but the question remains, what now?

Dryan43 suggested we should perhaps plan a new Archon. I am in favour of this. If Shah should ever return we would be more than happy to give him his old position back, but until then, we need someone to replace him. We have a great thing going with the New Athens group, and even if the other tribes die out we must not allow New Athens to run the same fate.

I already tried to discuss this with our current super admin, member jonathanstepney, but he does not respond to my messages.

What do the rest of you think?

My suggestion:

1) We nominate and vote for a new Archon, or at least someone to become a super admin in New Athens. We keep all the current admins and roles they way they are.

2) Then we go directly to chess.com and inform them that our super admin is no longer active and we want to assign a new super admin. (Jonathan will still remain the super admin. We just add another one.)

2.b) Councillors need administrative privileges, but the new super admin can take care of this. Shah talked about this right before he disappeared.

3) When this is done, we repeat this process for every tribe so that they can start running independently. I think it would be best if every tribe gets someone from within the tribe with enough admin privileges to start games and so forth. In the past Shah started all the battles, but this obviously cannot continue.

4) Finally, we get members to start advertising again so we can continue growing. We could do this on a rotational basis. More on this later.

Please let me know what you think of this.

Councillor of The Antiochis Tribe,
Captain Hook.

The big irony is, in trying to copy the democracy of classical New Athens, we ended up with a group run by a single person.

Generals, councillers, and phylarches?  Anyway, back on track.  Johnpeter101 says he would like to be a general.  Maybe he'd like to ba an archon, or is that too much work?

Avatar of capt_hook

Or maybe we should not have an Archon at all. Just make sure we have enough to keep the group and tribes active.

I just visited the city map, and noticed Shah's words: "Councillors will eventually run the city" and "Archon currently runs the city." Maybe instead of appointing a new Archon we should give the current active councillors more admin privileges. What do you think?

dryan, I cannot find Johnpeter101. Could you perhaps post a link to his profile?

Hi Captain Hook and Dryan. I am disappointed with Jonathanstepney for not bothering to assume his SA role in the absence of Archon Shah. I suggest that we elect another SA who will stand as Archon in the absence of Shah. Someone who has more time here and have less groups to worry about... My tribe Keckropis is dying from inactivity too. I was skeptical about so many groups under New Athens in the first place because this might be too much for 1 Archon to check even if phylarches are there. Funny in a way too because other tribe members would rather stay in 1 tribe and not bother to be a member under New Athens at all. Remember that most are seriously playing chess here but only a few can spend time socializing often... Yes, I would go for the selection of a new SA then we shall talk about other problems with the tribes later.

My vote goes to you Captain Hook! Please say yes! :)

My guess on why Jonathanstepney is not doing something: Archon Shah told me that he was supposed to be the deity. In real Athens, the deity didn't talk (because it's the a fake). This group is bent on relating to it. Have you heard the voice of a being greater than humans?

Avatar of capt_hook

(humorously off topic)

@dryan. Actually, in greek mythology the deities did occasionally interact with humans, but they would do so disguised, often as travellers. The deities have a keen interest in humans since they desire our worshop and sacrifices. (Because, what else do the gods do anyway?)

Humans worship deities because they have our fate in their hands. They provide for us in various ways. Poseidon, the old one, gives us favourable winds at sea. Rich-haired Demeter, the goddess of fertility, makes the seasons favourable for harvest. Every day the child of morning, rosy-fingered Dawn, appears to start the day.

But most important of all, Athena, the bright-eyed daughter of far-seeing Zeus, provides us with wisdom and prudence for warfare. With her glittering golden sandals and bronze spear, this gray-eyed goddess deserves our praise more than any other.

That said, as a proud Athenian hero, I reject Jonathanstepney as a deity. He rejected my hecatombs (my "sacrifices" as attempts to contact him) and abandoned us in a time of need in the absense of our Archon.

It is time for new heroes to arise and earn their fame.

(back to serious matters)

@Cokku: If the others agree with you then I would accept the role as Archon.

Just know that I do not have as much time on my hands as Shah did. I will need help form all the generals, councillers, and phylarches (and what else we have, I'm not even sure) to make this work. I will act as no more than an overseer, as I am only really active in the vote chess games. You can run requests through me and I will help update e.g. battle chess spreadsheets, but you guys will have to start the games yourself.

Sounds good to me..

Yayyyy!!!!! Finally a regency Archon! Thanks for saving this group that Achon Shah started. His name shall always be here...

As for the Deity, I agree with Captain Hook. Common, we already failed to assume what this group was about in the first place... The contineouos absence of Archon Shah would have been triggered his godly protective instinct enough to do something prophylactic so that the members in New Athens need not be concerned...

Yes Captain Hook, welcome to the confines of New Athens. You must quit the seas for now and rebuild :)

First off, how are we going to do it?

Avatar of capt_hook

Cool Laughing

Well then, it is a good thing Athens (in Greece) is right next to the Mediterranean Sea, also called "The Corrupting Sea," creating a rich network of links, enabling both trade and warfare. I fit right in.

I am in the process of contacting chess.com support to make myself a super admin of New Athens and The Antiochis Tribe.

Avatar of LazorSword

Hold up.  I think I have the ability to be a good archon, too.  I want to help New Athens as well.

Avatar of LazorSword

Another thing:  whoever is archon has to run other tribes, the agora, and other groups.  That's a lot.

Can't we have 2 archons?

Avatar of capt_hook

We definitely need to share responsibilities. Whether we have two Archons or one Archon and a couple of right-hand Generals, all your help will definitely be needed to make this work. I just don't think Archons should be a free-for-all position, because once we have two Archons we will soon have three or four or five...

The other option is to have NO Archon. I will still get super admin rights on all the groups to get things going, but then I will assign responsibility to each person accordingly. Archon or not, I am here to serve the group.

What do you guys think?

PS: Regarding super admin rights, chess support contacted jonathanstepney to see if they can get a response from him. Now we wait.

PPS: If people prefer dryan to me as Archon, then I'm fine with it. We can have a vote in the Athenian democratic way if you want, that's probably what Shah would say. Smile

Avatar of LazorSword

It's true that we can have two archons, but I don't think that's how Athens was.  Yes, we could have no archon, and let the general and phylarches run the place.

Avatar of M-W-R

Yeah, I mean if there are 2 archons, then the generals and phylarches kind of don't have that many responsibilities, since the 2 archons can do it.
