Who is the Chess GOAT?

Now this is a heated debate that has been going on ever since Magnus first reigned on the throne of World Champions in 2013.

The question is... Who do you think is the best? Why? Back up your claim!

Good Luck! I'll start off with my pick (Magnus)

I’m not much into this but (sorry for language idk if I can) but Fischer is obviously the best, getting that good at chess after getting obsessed with it and he is just an absolute bad ass playing a chess game in North Korea (fact check me please if I’m wrong) and he taught himself Russian so like overall Fischer is my pick

You are all good with the language happy.png
For me Fischer is my worst pick. I actually made a blog about that but from your arguments it seems like you think he's the goat just because he has big balls (Which I do agree with).

In terms of actual skill however I think Magnus is the most dominant overall rather than his time (Fischer).

Yea I agree magnus overall is a better player but Fischer has better charisma and things that bump him up to be the GOAT

GrubbyViper382

But we also have to put in the fact that as we advance in chess throughout the years, the people who play them have a better understanding and could learn better than what Fischer had, like nowadays you can pay $60 a month and get up to 1200 with ease. Just like in the next generation of chess players they will be better than magnus ever could be.

GM_Katsu

Its very true that it's WAY easier to become a GM now than in the past. That is why I said Fischer was the GOAT of his time. Magnus has way more resources than what Fischer had and that plays a big part on where he is right now but that doesn't exclude him from the goat debate just because he had a huge advantage that was no fault of his. If we are just talking about chess skill then I have to put magnus at the top and Kasparov at second. Another big reason for this is the fact that Fischer could only play the way he did if his surroundings were essentially perfect as prove by the 1972 World Championship.

Who is the chess G.O.A.T.?
The debate about the greatest chess player of all time, also known as the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) debate, is a topic of much discussion among chess enthusiasts. Several players are often mentioned as contenders for this title, including Magnus Carlsen, Garry Kasparov, and Bobby Fischer.

Magnus Carlsen is a Norwegian chess grandmaster who has been the World Chess Champion since 2013. Carlsen is known for his exceptional positional understanding and endgame skills. He has achieved the highest rating in chess history and has consistently dominated the chess world in recent years 1.

Garry Kasparov is a Russian chess grandmaster who held the World Chess Championship title from 1985 to 2000. Kasparov is widely regarded as one of the greatest chess players of all time. He was known for his aggressive and dynamic playing style, as well as his exceptional tactical abilities. Kasparov's longevity and his six World Chess Championship victories make him a strong contender for the G.O.A.T. title 2.

Bobby Fischer was an American chess grandmaster who became the World Chess Champion in 1972. Fischer's contribution to chess is significant, as he played a crucial role in popularizing the game and bringing it into the mainstream. Fischer's understanding of the game and his dominance during his peak years make him a strong candidate for the G.O.A.T. title 2.

It is important to note that the G.O.A.T. debate is subjective, and opinions may vary among chess enthusiasts. Each player has their own unique strengths and achievements, and different criteria can be used to evaluate their greatness. Ultimately, the choice of the chess G.O.A.T. depends on individual preferences and perspectives 3.

I would have to agree with ChatGPT here. Opinions are subjective with their own arguments but theres a reason why we are here and it's to try to prove our own side of things. It wouldn't be much of a debate club without yknow... debates.

Yeah, i would agree with that. I looked up "greatness" and it is defined as superiority and being distinguished - in this case, the level of dominance over the players of their age. Thus, I wouldn't say Magnus is the GOAT even though his knowledge of openings, and even the game as a whole is probably more comprehensive than Kasparov or Fischer

GM_Katsu

Dominance overall is kind of hard to point out though. Fischer was exceptionally dominant for his time but overall we can't really say and that goes for all the candidates. The reality is we can't really prove the GOAT since the timeframes were so separated.

Knightwrath1

True, it is nearly impossible to quantify superiority. Still, my pick for the GOAT is Paul Morphy (i just love looking at his games).

GM_Katsu

Paul Morphy's games are quite cool I do agree. That is another thing to add however. Paul Morphy at his time was much more dominant than Ficher in his time but that does not mean Morphy is the GOAT (In my opinion) So that kind of proves the point I'm trying to get at where it is almost impossible to tell the true GOAT

GrubbyViper382

Yea stacking these players up isn’t really fair anyways but still I give it to magnus he is the goat of chess but Fischer has a place in my heart
