HOW TO USE DGT BOARD AND CHROME EXTENSION CORRECTLY !

I noticed that the /live page is getting retired this year according to a popup I just received. Has anyone retested the DGT integration on the new interface recently?

Avatar of x-8565307611

I have retested it today, and the situation is still the same. The new interface has neither reliable move detection nor does the voice extension work. So I created a new forum topic in the main forum.

BTW, this forum is not searchable from the chess.com main forum, so the information here is not easily found if somebody does not know the DGT chess club.

I also raised this in the Beta club with my testing results. One of their support team messaged me for more details and they have nor recreated and confirmed the problem in the new interface, so looks like we have the first step towards a fix

Long time i am using my dgt board at this site. Not working for me. Some moves works suddenly but most of the time it is not working, still the message that the board is synced.... Not any problems at lichess with the board. I follow all the steps and i do have al the latest software. Its really a crime with this site. Any suggestions are welcome. I do have the USB board.

Are you using /play or /live ? It only works reliably at /live

I realize you might have read the instructions at the beginning of the thread. However, it turned out that it needs an essential update for playing only works on the old interface and a few other things. I documented this here.

Playing with the DGT board works on the old interface only, not on the new interface. I just tried, no news. The old one still works fine, and the new one does not work. The problems there are still the same and are like you described.

Many thanks for the help! Works fine in the old interface.

I'm told to expect an update by April for DGT in the new interface.

I put all I know about the board in this video. I hope it helps.

That should be a useful video for others. You might want to consider adding Timestamps for each step for people to refer to

Thanks for the tip! I added timestamps in the description, but not yet reflected, maybe later. BTW, I find the advertisement a bit annoying. I underestimated it when making the video.

Attention, here comes an advertisement... :
I put some other instructional videos for the DGT board below, now not related to chess.com. Please let me know in case if that is helpful or I go on your nerves :-)

Is anybody having issues with the voice commentary chrome extension in /live after the latest release (14 Mar 22)? Now voice commentary only seems to work in /play. Problem is, as others have said earlier in this thread, DGT is completely unreliable in /play. For instance, castling doesn't seem to work (even moving King first), and most of my King moves are not detected for some reason. Never had these issues with /live.

Good to hear they will be updating DGT support in /play soon, though. Maybe this will set things right again.

@er642 Same observation here. Now the move announcement works in /play, but not anymore in /live. Move detection in /play does often not work for the king, so the king sometimes cannot be moved at all, and also castling does not work.

I have tried about two weeks ago and today. When connecting the DGT board, no matter if on /live or /play the voice commentary extension does not work. Without the voice commentary using the DGT board is basically useless.

But I found that when I watch games using Watch / Playing now, the voice commentary works. Does anybody has an idea what is going on?

I have not tried playing in /play with a DGT board as I still understand that to be broken (King moves/castling), however when I have played there without the DGT board move announcements have still been working.

For DGT play, I am playing at /live using @Hyper-Dragon 's great Chrome extension / Windows app for the move announcements (+ mismatch detection). Works great. https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/dgt-angel-initial-public-release

I've seen this, but now I understand only. The moving support is still from the website, but the plugin announces the moves. That's great.

The mismatch detection, however, would need improvement; it's disturbing to alert if I didn't replay any move in a few seconds and also sometimes shows up for nothing. This is the problem I saw with many DGT software, it works to some point, but it seems complicated to make the final mile. But overall great to have such a possibility.

You can adjust the delay value, giving you more time to make a move before the  mismatch announcement

Thanks for the hint. That is good.

However, not criticising the tool, for it's free, just the facts.

When I play e4, my opponent plays d5, but I replay the wrong move e5; a mismatch detection must hang in right away. That is not the case. If I have a delay setting of 15 seconds, it tells me the mismatch 15 seconds after I replayed the wrong move.

As the software does not control the moves, it cannot prevent wrong moves. I play e4, the opponent plays d5, but I replay e5, I play f4, and f4 is a game move.

That is something the chess.com software should do, but this basic feature request a year ago does not interest the responsible persons.

Almost, but not quite.

When playing online everything is set up as normal with the CDC smart board option enabled and live chess running.    This software is in two parts and runs alongside that.  The extension watches for moves made on the CDC web page and sends these to the client. The voice/mismatch detection etc is handled by the client.

You can change the time delay on the config screen in the client.  The way it works is that when the board changes it sets a timer to check for a match after the configured delay.  That timer is cancelled if another move is made during the delay period.

This does keep coming up so I have changed the default delay for the next release.

Just as a side note, this is a hobby project of mine (not affiliated to DGT or CDC) so I can get the most of my expensive toy.  Honestly, I would be happy if CDC built a custom smart board page into the site with the same functionality as this.  It would be a lot easier.

This is the first (Alpha) release so I do expect issues and quirks.  I agree that, while simple in theory, it is difficult to nail online play especially when there is no API access.  What makes this harder is that it is difficult to fully test without actually playing (and no, I don't have a second account for testing since I feel that would be unfair on my opponents).

Thank you and watch out for the next release...fingers crossed later this week.
