Intercity Daily Tournaments in 2017 - Discussion.

Hello!

I still consider the possibility of a Swiss tournament this year, but honestly, I  don't see how it can fit with WCL, WCL960 and ECL, where teams get 4-5 matches every month till July.

I myself think that adding any more matches in that period before August would overburden most of the teams.

Matches that count for 2 or even 3 tournaments that existed in our 2 previous seasons were not a good thing because they potentially caused some disagreement and were a matter of my choice (I tried to be objective and I thank the team managers for not blaming me, but still it was a deviation from the "pairing by the software" principle).

Then we have August, September and October (and probably early November) with only 4 matches in WCL 960 planned - and I think that would be a good time to organize some event, although no "normal" Swiss tournament would fit in just 4 months with 3days/move control.

I fancy some kind of what is played in Pro Chess League (see https://www.chess.com/article/view/pro-chess-league-guide) - 4 big regional divisions with preset 6 or 7 rounds, (not all teams in the same division should necessarily play each other) and then some best-standing teams continue in match elimination format. This would be much easier to manage than a Swiss competition, but we'll need some objective criterion ranking teams. But this format is just an idea.

What I wish to absolutely avoid is promotions, demotions and multi-tier divisions - this is all stress and no fun.

If anyone can add anything, they are welcome.

A) Please consider schedule of Chess960 WCL too. It is already available in forum and wcl.tode.cz.

B) I would not create regional divisions. It is not needed if it is not Live chess and it is more interesting to play teams from other part of world.

I will try think about reasonable format to go with WCL ECL CWC but have no idea now.

a) Sorry, I was just adding WCL 960 mentions as you commented. happy.png

b) If there already are ongoing regional competitions, regional divisions may be not good, but if they are missing, then divisions can be fun.

In our region, Slavic league is deader than dead, same about Eurasian league.

I alredy tried making some derbies. For example, Australian teams had not played each other for years, until they met in the Swiss tournament.

Another good thing: management of different regional divisions can be trusted to different people, who are not tied to that particular region to ensure objectivity.

Repeated matches between teams who have already met during the season in the same WCL division / group can be also avoided (at least at the division stage).

I like this tournament. Anyway I will agree with the majority, whatever you decide.

The main reason of the undertaking is the existence of PRO Chess League.

There is a PRO Chess league - good. It is build around city = team principle. Even better.

Why there can't be a similar Amateur Chess League?

Nice idea! ;-)

Also, we can reconsider do we want to play daily tournament at all if until August chess.com finally add an option of playing club vs. club live matches!?

Dale00007

It could be good idea to save efforts and put them into live tournament.

I wanted to propose ie. keeping swiss but in 1day games. But Live would be better.

lpr16

Live would be new and nice.
