Anyone willing to try my new variant?

My new project

I have an idea to modernize Courier Chess. This is a rough approximation of what it would look like.

Pawns and Queens move like modern chess, castling is allowed. Pawns promote to any type of piece in the board.

The b2, k2 and b7, k7 pawns are undefended. They wouldn't be a big problem imo (You can develop the Knights there, or just block it with a pawn.

Q and A

1. Why a general?

There are 3 rooks (including queen), 3 couriers (once again including the queen.) Why not include a 3rd Knight + King to make up for the poor Schleich / Jester? And the Jester is a sergeant now. Pretty cool huh?

the only problem is that i don't see a significant strategic difference (yet) but if there is one then quite possibly this can be accepted

Which position should I use? (both are untested)

Red and Blue have a starting cooldown of 4, while Yellow and Green have a starting cooldown of 3. It's so that it doesn't suck as much to be Y or G.

Experimenting....

I think it would be hard to checkmate the Alibaba, and he could leap over pieces.

But we'll see.....

It's very possible. Alibaba's aren't too hard, and I know from CVs.

And I found an interesting fact, the general or the Queen paired with a simple defender, can single-handedly checkmate an Alibaba. But the Alibaba renders one courier to be useless in checkmating.

First ever gameplay of this concept! And pawns promote to any piece except the Queen, because

1. 12 pawns.

2. I want to make the Queens stand out more as pieces, so pawns promoting to Queens imo, makes the board have a crazyhouse of tactics (not bad, but just isn't up to me)

3. Generals (The piece replacing the Sage). Undoubtly powerful at close range. Even though the Queen beats it, I wanted to make it close as possible to medieval chess (while being as powerful as modern chess). The general does the job of a close-range Queen very well, and the Rooks do the job of controlling files. Pawns can promote to any piece except the Queen, which imo, preserves some of the 'gameplay flavour' of old Courier Chess.

Side note: This variant is best played on a time control longer than modern chess (bigger board, more pieces etc...)

We can't help you much here since this isn't the place to report bugs

Actually I did some futer moves and the king went off the board, so maybe try resizing the board?

LATEST (and hopefully final) VERSION OF CUSTOM VARIANT "Great Horde"

After recieving feedback from other players and tests, this will be the position and rules of my own variant, the "Great Horde". Any suggestions?

Thanks. I resized and I discovered that there were hidden free spaces that were not shown by the standard 10x8 board. I bricked them and it's all fine.

tbh seems good you should try submitting it

but giving black two lines of pawns doesn't really make for fast gameplay, and with a5 and n5 the flank pawns are protected (i'm not a variant tester lol, i could be completely wrong)

acgusta2

I added some new piece types to my position, including an archbishop, general, and knight.

This is an example game

I think to many pecies maybe try to make it into a smaller board

A new take

After thinking a bit about how generic Hypercourier Chess (my Courier Chess improvement variant) is, I decided to add a twist to it. No more 12x8 board (Reduced to 10x8). But at the same time, more pieces. No more Queens, because the Queen is too powerful (especially in Fog of War). Couriers regain their throne once again, since they (and the rooks) are the ONLY long range pieces in the board. Pawns may promote to a Courier (Bishop in modern chess), Rook or King. Castling is allowed.

This will probably not be known as a 'Courier Chess improvement' anymore but I have some ideas for the name like The River: II or The Dark Forest.

I think this is a major improvement over the standard-stale chess starting setup. What are your opinions?

Okay fair point so should I remove the Forward pawns there?

Also 2 rows of pawns is the only way its somewhat balanced for black

Take 4 of Great Horde

https://www.chess.com/variants/custom/game/69398638

I'm submitting this to variants world

Strats for White

  • Storm black center
  • Defend flanks rigorously

Strats for Black

  • Attack flanks
  • Sack pawns like nobodys buisness

Anyone wanna play a game of it later?
