Profanity filter in private messages

Ok, so this is second time that my very long message gets deleted and warning popped up that i need to follow community guidelines.

While I think this could be nice way to prevent players from insulting each other after lost game, this cannot be applied lightly to conversation between friends or after 100+ messages exchanged. Especially because it cannot determine context in which any of banned words is used.

For example right now, I was writing message to one friend, and describing one situation using specific term "prodaja muda pod bubrege" in Serbian. Loosely translated it means "cheating" or "misguiding". I suspect here word "muda" was the one which triggered this filter, as it translates to "bollocks" 

If I may make suggestion, please do not simply delete message, rather mark the offending words and let user rephrase his message. I lost 30 minutes of my life due to this, not very pleasant thing to have.

I translate that for portuguese and gives "selling beans". Everyone knows that can't be said!

Not a nice thing to say, but i heard worst here...

i was thinking and in portuguese we have a similar saying "comprar gato por lebre", meaning to buy cat as hare, because in the medieval times, namely in war times it was common for merchants to sell cats as hare because they have a similar aspect. Any portuguese knows this and say this in a normal conversation, but for a foreigner or even to a computer, is difficult to understand the real meaning of the sentence. Of course i do not mean you are selling me cat, what i mean is you are cheating me in the deal. Same idea, different foods!

It sure sounds weird but I can tell what you mean, I really just think that they (Chess.com's makers and leaders) should look at what else it can mean.

That is similar with english "pig in a poke", i believe. I just found that buy cat as hare is used in brazil too. So this saying is probably older than 1500...

Yeah I am having issues like this too. If I'm chatting privately with a friend it's no one's business what language I use.

I got muted for 24 hours for this recently, and the moderator who responded to me was helpful insofar as she unmuted me, but she didn't explain why I am being penalized in a chat with a personal friend...

Lets not forget that one word can have different meaning in different language.

For example, if you say “how many times” in Serbian , its “ koliko puta” and “puta” has very negative connotation in Spanish.

There is hudreds if not thousands or similar examples, so I doubt this idea with filter is something which will improve overall experience here for average user.

i heard some time ago that euros (money currency plural) is a bad word in greek.

as a suggestion, maybe if we allowed a special set of friends lists (ones that users have to manually add, rather than based on the automatic one that could be for practically anyone)... we could implement this? I know it's supposed to be kid/family friendly but if people trust each other enough because they knew each other irl first... it's fine.

yeah and some of my friends here on chess.com are people I know in real life and when we insult each other (not swearing but like calling them bots [long story not explaining]) we take it as a joke, just the way it was intended. I understand if you delete the message in a public forum but don't delete private messages because they are exactly that - private. And, as @CoachGunnar said, private messages are none of your buisness chess.com. (I am not usually so negative but I value my privacy)

I think in this case is more important to keep written content and possibly mark the offending words, then trying to rework how filter works. 
To say again, I lost 30 minutes to write long messages which were lost without any sort of explanation what I did wrong in fact. "Community guidelines" is just too vague in this particular case.

Not to mention that scanning private messages is of questionable legality in first place.

By principle i agree with you, but you have to consider the greater good versus privacy rights, in this case the high number of kids and young people, probably half of users (or even more). But if the message is private (and i mark the private) and having the kids and young people a selector in settings that may protect them from all verbal interaction at all if they want to, if (and i mark the if) the private message is between "friends", then it shouldn't pass any content filter. It may be saved for proof for any very akward situation, but should not be view/scanned otherwise.

So this problem escalated last night, I was muted and all my content again removed. 
It was restored back sometimes during night, though I did sent support request for clarification.

Now I'm afraid to write any messages (in Serbian) to friends and clubs members, completely lost on what triggers this filter and what terminology to use.

Whoever is responsible for this huge failure should read somewhere about how important is "user experience"  . . .
