Not in this game. I think tomato might be creating his own, but this game has become... sort of historical to chess.com, and I think we should keep it how it started.

I hate the harpy nerf, please don't do it

Why? is it because the only other piece you have is a harpy? Idk... I feel like harpies are out-of-place, they need a drastic change or to be replaced entirely.

Ok, pawns are just way too cheap to throw around threats. In normal chess pawns all have to start at the starting line...

Here's an idea! There will only be 1 promotion line (1 for pawns and one for pawns facing the other way) Pawns will only placeable on rank -3 and promote at rank 4. And make reversed pawns only placeable on rank 3 and promote at rank -4! That way their paths intersect, making it just slightly more like regular chess.

And promoting to anything above a queen is illegal. Dragons, harpies, & angels will only be obtainable from some special new way of generating them (you won't be able expend health to just generate them). And spirits will not be able to possess pawns, and also harpies cannot capture pawns.

Also I think the cannon and fortress should be deleted.

This was never ‘like regular chess’, it is a variant(and an amazing one at that) and we should appreciate it for what it is. happy.png

If pawns/pillars are nerfed to specific promotion lines, then what do we use for cheap attack? IMO pawns are good in attack specifically because their cheapness/low mobility makes them overall expendable, so nobody will hesitate to use them to attack. Also, the wildness of the current pawns/pillars mechanism really represents the game as a whole.

As for the dragons/harpies/angels, I think there could be an event where they reappear in the shop/promotion at higher ranks like now, and those wouldn’t disappear on event end? Or would that just leave too much chance to reintroduce them entirely? In that case adjust the cost down/promote at the same rank then offer a cheaper version that does despawn on event end(would not regain energy used to create it). Obviously that would need quite a bit of balancing, so it might be hard, but personally I think it could work.

I don’t think spirits/harpies can boost a pawn that much, and if you paid so much for the piece you might as well be able to boost one or two moves(since it takes time to capture the pawn and put a spirit/harpy near the pawn) with it right?

Cannon and fortress deletion: sure, don’t really mind wink.png

if we do this, maybe we could add a piece that is a pawn that doesn't promote?

nav, then if you cant promote to high pieces, and you cant buy them, how do you get them?

Pawns were never really used for attack in regular chess anyway, they are cheap only worth 1 point they shouldn't be so valuable for us to attack with.

Maybe I keep pawns and pillars how they are, except they are not allowed to promote. Then add in another kind of pawn, one that can only be placed on it's starting line, but can promote? (like what eswaff suggested)

EDIT: Then wait, wouldn't they still be able to be used for attacking then?

Maybe make then "conduits" (double-sided pawns), up the cost to 2, and allow placement anywhere?

I like it if we create an event called "Unlocked Tiers" that would allow us to promote into dragon/harpy/angel at the normal promotion line, but you still can't generate new ones expending health. That would make them a rarity sort of like how nukes are right now.

I don’t think spirits/harpies can boost a pawn that much,

They can save up to 2 or 3 moves promoting. I think you should have to promote your pawn by marching only.

and if you paid so much for the piece you might as well be able to boost one or two moves(since it takes time to capture the pawn and put a spirit/harpy near the pawn) with it right?

Spirits and harpies are pretty powerful even without pawns!

Could I suggest an event?

Name: The Soul Of Chess

Event: For the duration of this event, players are allowed to place pawns for free within 2 squares of an existing piece, but those pawns are your new special pawn that you’re going to make that can’t promote.(ie defensive pawn wall) Players that place x or more special pawns(you decide) gain 1 energy?(incentive to use the event, this bit isn’t necessary)

What does everyone think of this?: Pawns and Pillars will only be allowed to be placed on rank 0, unless you place them adjacent of a friendly piece, only if you place them adjacent of a friendly piece can you place pawns below rank 0 and pillars above rank 0!

This would stop cheap attacks with 1-point pawns! They can all still promote at rank 7. The 2nd promotion line is taken away and "Tiers Unlock" event added.

Maybe 2-4 squares from a friendly piece? Otherwise they are useless in attack as you’d need a piece literally right next to it and you might as well just move the piece grin.png

Okay Nav...

Normal Pawns: 7 moves

Spirit(cost of placing 1 spirit either to posses the pawn or that was paid earlier ie move an existing spirit): 6 moves(1 to bring the spirit, 1 to possess the pawn, then 4 moves to promote)

Harpy(cost of placing 1 harpy either to take the pawn or that was paid earlier ie move an existing harpy): 5 moves(1 to bring the harpy, 1 to take the pawn, 1 to drop the pawn on rank 5, then 2 moves to promote)

Spirits and harpies do cost quite a bit. They only boost 1-2 moves, right?(maybe the harpy can boost 3 if it’s well placed to take in 1 move but the spirit would need to get close first, besides the harpy is expensive and should probably have quite a bit of power. You’re planning to nerf it to 4 moves before recycling but it can only ‘throw’ pieces, right? Then still allow it to have the pawn boost, otherwise it just gets weak as you have to manoeuvre it around a lot.)

Avatar of Naviary

Harpy can actually only take 4 moves because you could just place the pawn already within range of the harpy.

It's just nobody's gonna push pawns the normal way when they could just do it faster. I'll lower the promotion line to make up for it.

Avatar of eswaff

what will the new event do?

Avatar of Naviary

It will allow promotion to dragon/angel/harpy, which you could no-other way obtain since the 2nd promotion line is removed, making them a rarity.

There are supposed to be useless in attack, they are worth 1 point...

you could still build pawn chains this way.

pawns are already cheap as they are, why make them free? and then reward for placing enough of them? Isn't the bonus of a protective wall reward enough?
