I have a question

Avatar of KnightSacsDal

should use the Vienna Gambit

Avatar of KnightSacsDal

or stick with something more reliable

Avatar of KnightSacsDal

or the sicillians?

you can use the Vienna as white but should not rely on it, it is well known and easy to counter, the sicilians for black are always an excellent refuge but do not work against Queen pawn openings. this is in my humble opinion and others may have different thoughts on the subject.

I'm 1000 and no one on my level knows how to counter the vienna, so it'll probably be fine for KnightSacs. I'd still learn the critical lines tho, just to be safe. You're gonna crush with the vienna

i love the vienna, it has the frankenstien dracula variation, the dark vienna, the vienna gambit and the copy cat vienna as well as the main structure is really strong i highly reccomend it for people looking for an E4,E5 opening and want to have a a good chance of traps. But be aware you will run into the 4 knights variation more than anything and that can be rough if your opponent is more comfortable than you.

I say stay away from the sicillians if you can for black. They are reliable and solid but you need to kinda know multiple of them since they can transpose into eachother fairly easily and the late game variations in each can be unique. I have attempted learned krishnikov, accelerated dragon. nighjdorf, and classical variations so that is where the opinion comes from. Unlesss you are building for a life time type opening or want to be a titled player the sicillians are alot for a causal player just looking for something simple to get going.

Caro-kan has a solid pawn structure and a fairly similar plan no matter the variation. I personally enjoy the pass variation.

Sorry went on a tangit there. To answer your actual question.. depends. The vienna gambit is strong but if your opponent follows the line E4-E5, NC3-NF6,(START OF GAMBIT) and follows your F4 with D5 you need to be aware of how to handle that since that is the counter to the gambit and it can be painful is handled wrong. it is not common before 1300 to 1400 but it is there.

Everyone here

Cool I guess

Avatar of ApostleArakos

the max lang defense starts after move 2 if black copies you. it leads into and amzing trap called the copy cat vienna where you either win the match, win a rook, or win a queen unless you opponent has VERY percise play.. Again a huge trap opening thats fun

I have practiced 3 ish lines of the Vienna but until I practice and master all 14 of them I will stick with the Spanish until that moment

Avatar of ApostleArakos

how is the spanish? i have been trying to decide between spanish, ponziani, and italian for my next opening.

Avatar of KnightSacsDal

Italian or Spanish is fine until around 1400 elo where you need more intermediate openings like the varieties of Sicillians, Vienna, or even English

Avatar of ApostleArakos

yeah i play the english right now and have a long way to master it but i started with the vienna. curious though do you see a benefit in your games when playing one over the other in regards to italian or spanish. they are pretty neck in neck so its the nuances that matter.

I will play the Ruy López now

But once I reach 1300+
