Straw Poll--Mosque near Ground Zero

Religious freedom is a right we can't afford to lose. If it's not illegal, they should have the right to do so. Period.

Precisely.

Since 1970 there's already an islamic prayer house next to ground zero, why is noone complaining about that one instead?

I'd guess because this one is being established post-September 11 and there is still a lot of anti-Islamic feeling in New York (particularly around the area in question). It is interesting to know that there is an Islamic prayer house located next to Ground Zero, though, and I think that it would help many of the people complaining to rationalise the situation if they were informed of this.

Glad to see that we don't seem to have much in the way of irrational hatred coursing through the rabid "new atheist" movement, at least among those dedicated enough to join the group on a chess site.

the United States should encourage moderate islam.
Also, there is a freedom of religion or in our cases irreligion
I completely support this

I've got nothing against a new mosque, although building it on ground zero strikes me as a weird idea.
All in all, however, I'd say "go for it", but just for one reason: Muslim religious warmongers are going to have a real hard time trying to convince their people of how evil Americans are, after this.
It is a clever political move, I must admit.
I wanted to run a straw poll and see how we break down on the ground zero mosque issue. I have no problem with it.
