Check with the Pittsburgh Chess Club. there is a link in the local chess part of the Share tag up above. they play most weekends and i believe also on Tuesdays. I used to be a member, but i moved further away, and is now over an hour drive one way for me, so just too time consuming and expensive. There is another run at Pitt Univ., but i dont know who to contact.
USCF Rating
Smarty, this is why I was so bent on getting the chess club at CalU started, I wanted to make it a location in which we could have USCF sactioned games/tournaments. There is a fee to be had with membership though, understandably though.
There are a lot of tournaments at U Pittsburgh (including the Pittsburgh Chess League and a lot of state championships) and their site has information about West PA tourneys here: http://www.pitt.edu/~schach/ChessPA/wpastate.htm. Some are also at Pittsburgh Chess Club, which is pretty close to that area.
About contacting Pitt, I would suggest Tom Martinak although I'm at Carnegie Mellon (next to Pitt) so I'm not that familiar with it.
actually there was one today at pitt I was at, there is at least 1-3 chess events in the pittsburgh area every month
check out this link http://www.pitt.edu/~schach/ChessPA/wpatnmts.htm
Thanks everyone for the help! Much appreciated! I checked out the websites you mentioned. I've also emailed Tom Martinak.
So I played in my first USCF-rated chess tournament today. Just wanted to say thanks once again for all of your help. I had a good time. Looking forward to playing again soon.
Hey everyone. Looking for a little help. I'm considering pursuing a USCF rating (I've never had a USCF rating). I would like to play in face-to-face tournaments, or at least a club that meets regularly. I understand to obtain a USCF rating, I need to do the following:
1) Join USCF
2) Play in USCF tournaments
My question is, where in the Pittsburgh area are USCF tournaments? I've searched the USCF website and on google, finding the Morgantown Chess Club and the Pittsburgh Chess League. Have any of you participated in either of these? Are there other USCF tournaments in the area that you know of? Is it a difficult process to obtain a USCF rating?
I know several of you have USCF ratings. Just looking for any insight you could share (how did you get your USCF rating? where do you play your USCF sanctioned games). Thanks in advance for your help.
